When I ask senior executives how they define “strategic product management,” these five things come up most often.

  1. Understanding the market better than all other customer-facing disciplines (sales, marketing, customer success, etc.).
  2. Leadership.
  3. Delivering more growth oriented solutions.
  4. The ability to facilitate business conversations with customers.
  5. Articulating the customer value of products without explaining technical features.
